Im Rahmen seiner Einzelausstellung „bowling alone“ in der Galerie Mirko Mayer konfrontiert Maximilian Erbacher den Betrachter erneut mit Fragen sozialer Interaktion, die sich zwischen öffentlichem und privatem Raum abspielt. Hierzu erweitert der Künstler sein Projekt „Heute bin ich Dein Freund“, das sich als „work in progress“ in temporärer Performance und konkreten Ausstellungssituationen manifestiert. In Form eines Slogans begleitet es gleichermaßen mehrere Aktionen wie ein Mantra und führt, indem es in verschiedenen Arbeiten wiederholt auftaucht, zu einem déjà vu- Erlebnis.
„Heute bin ich dein Freund“. Mit diesem Versprechen hat sich Maximilian Erbacher im Rahmen seiner gleichnamigen Performance bereits in München, Pècs (Ungarn) und Shanghai jedem, der wollte, als Freund für die Dauer eines Tages angeboten. Nun bringt der Künstler die Aktion im Kontext der Ausstellung bei Mirko Mayer nach Köln. Wie an den vorherigen Standorten wird die Performance auf die Dauer einer Woche beschränkt sein. In einem Ladenlokal in der Kölner Innenstadt richtet Erbacher ein Call-Center ein. Hier kann man eintreten, eine Konversation beginnen, den Künstler als Freund für einen Tag z. B. für diverse Gefallen einspannen. Zwecks Kontaktaufnahme sind Zettel in DIN A 4 Format mit der Aufschrift „Heute bin ich Dein Freund“ und seiner Rufnummer auf kleinen Streifen, die man abreißen und mitnehmen kann, in einem Radius von etwa 3 Kilometern vom Ladenlokal aus im öffentlichen Raum verteilt.
Die Performance gestaltet sich als Teil der Einzelausstellung, in der gleichsam alle Fäden zusammenlaufen, indem unter anderem eine Videoinstallation als Ergebnis der Performance, wie sie in München, Pècs und Shanghai erfolgte, präsentiert wird. Die beiden räumlichen Fixpunkte – Call- Center und Galerie – bilden dahingehend für eine kurze Zeit eine Beispielanordnung dessen, was der Künstler im Zuge der Aktion in diesen Städten beobachten konnte: Die Suche nach Austausch, Aufmerksamkeit und Anschluß verbunden mit der Neugier auf Entdeckung verschiedener Kommunikationswege. Hier wird die zunehmende Verschiebung vom privaten zum öffentlichen bzw. semi-öffentlichen Raum offenbar, und dies nicht erst seit dem Auftreten moderner Kontaktmedien und -foren. Demnach bewies sich selbst der einfache Aushang von Zetteln im öffentlichen Raum als effektiver Ausgangspunkt für die Kontaktaufnahme und „berührte bisher an jedem der drei Orte einen tiefen Sehnsuchtspunkt nach Kommunikation und Nähe“ (Zitat Maximilian Erbacher).

In the context of his solo show „bowling alone“ at Mirko Mayer gallery, Maximilian Erbacher confronts the spectator anew with questions of social interaction happening between public and private space. To this effect, the artist expands the realm of his project „Today I Am Your Friend“, a „work in progress“ manifesting itself in form of temporary performance and concrete situations of exhibition. As a slogan it also accompanies several actions like a mantra and evokes a déjà vu-experience by appearing repetitively in different works.
„Today I Am Your Friend“. Following this promise, Maximilian Erbacher has already offered himself as a friend for one day to anyone who wanted during his homonymous performance in Munich, Pècs (Hungary) and Shanghai. The artist now brings it to Cologne as part of the exhibition at Mirko Mayer gallery. The action will be restricted to the duration of a single week, just like it was in the previous places. Erbacher sets up a call- center in an empty store located in the city centre of Cologne. Everyone can enter there, start with a conversation, ask the artist, the friend for one day, for various favours etc. For the purpose of personal approach, several pieces of paper in A 4 format lettered „Today I Am Your Friend“ will be distributed in public space within a radius of 3 kilometres starting from the call- center. Small stripes with the artist’s phone number can be torn off from these notices and taken away.
The performance is closely related to the solo show where all threads are gathered. Amongst others, a video installation will be presented at the gallery as a result of the acion as it was carried out in Munich, Pècs and Shanghai. For a short time, the two spacial points of reference – i.e. call- center and gallery – form an exemplary arrangement reflecting what the artist observed and experienced in the course of his performance in these cities: The search for exchange, attention and contact related to the curiosity to discover different channels of communication. The increasing shift from private to public, respectively semi-public space, becomes evident, and not only since the appearance of modern contact media and fora. Therefore, the simple posting of paper notices in public space showed itself as an effective point of departure for approach, as it „has touched so far a deeply rooted longing for communication and closeness in each one of the three locations“ (Maximilian Erbacher).
